Dub Specialist (aka Sylvan Morris) - Dub Store Special

Producer: Clement 'Coxsone' Dodd

Label: Studio One

Released: circa 1976

Source: cassette tape made from JA mint vinyl (that is,
"mint" according to the Studio One standards...)

Encoder: Lame 3.92 - matching the original Fraunhofer codec
in razor sharp accuracy, and is moreover FAST and FREE

Ok, so I already had all tracks except three on an old tape
but yet downloaded the entire album from the FTP to get the
missing dubs (who knows, maybe a superior vinyl copy was
awaiting me...). With an average 9 dB below normalization,
however, it could hardly be said to be an optimal vinyl rip.
And since I taped my copy of the record when new, the tape
still possessed that pristine Studio One sound: wildly
crackling and filled with sharp clicks but of course also
all the original detail in the recording. That's why I
provide a new copy sounding very much better and also
playing at an adequate listening level.

Having encoded this mono record using single channel mp3s
at 160 Kb/s also means that you get much higher resolution
than with the old rip. (The standard stereo format 192
divided by two channels means the absolute resolution is
only 96 Kb and you threfore download more bytes and still
get less musical detail. The single channel format is sadly
overlooked when it comes to improving the listening quality
of mono recordings without having to up/download more in
terms of bytes.)

I took the three missing tracks from the 192 Kb rip and did
everything possible to clean up their sound. There should
not be too hard to tell the difference between tracks 2, 10
and 12 and the rest, taken from that 20+ year old cassette
tape. But given the circumstances this still is a set worth
downloading.

The dubs themselves are not spectacularly dramatic, but the
riddims are so classy! And those being rather instrumentals
than dubs are great and immortal music.

(See release notes to "Simeons", "Rita Marley/Who Knows It",
"Ossie & The Revolutionaries" and a few other "tape-to-mp3"
folders for details on the equipment used to capture this LP
back at the beginning of time.)

Enjoy!

PS. I must for a second time confess having borrowed a
cover thumbnail scan from his excellent Studio One site.
Thank you. The site is found at http://koti.mbnet.fi/maple/
